Amazon narrows the field for its HQ2 project

Amazon has announced the top 20 candidates for its $5 billion, 50,000 job HQ2 project (highlighted in map below).

The list includes many ‘typical’ large US cities such as Boston, Chicago, Denver, New York and Washington DC. The list also includes many lesser known destinations such as Indianapolis, Montgomery County Maryland, Nashville, Raleigh North Carolina. Many of these lesser known areas have been growing consistently over the last two decades and many of them have transitioned themselves into modern, global centres of business. Beyond the quality of their workforce and infrastructure, many of these lesser known areas also offer a quality of life that is very attractive to future Amazon workers.

As with the original RFP from September last year, Amazon has demonstrated that the process is as much about costs and workforce as well as local community and quality of life.

It will be interesting to see how these lesser known areas compete against the larger centres as the process continues.
